Her Sunshine Smile came from a chance comment that my eldest son, Matthew, made about a girl he’d just become involved with a few years ago – I believe that they’re still together, in their contemporary way. Anyway, when he first described her to me, he said that her smile was like “sunshine”. That word was unusual- Matt’s not prone to the poetic, so, I certainly took notice.

The smile meant ONLY for me

Oh, I’ve lived for it
I’ve breathed it
I’ve survived on it &
I’ve grieved as grim, grey clouds drifted in
and in those moments of sudden, changing light,
I’ve experienced the horror of knowing that her smile was no longer for me.

But if my Life has thankfully proven that even from heartbreak, Love’s Phoenix can rise from the ashes, then, let that knowledge stay with me.  Instead, for the young, look to the young, like Carman Cifter, the Turkish artist who created the Sunshine Smile illustration – they live in the bliss of the moment.

In Carman’s frozen confectionery world, we find two young lovers, he with a blueberry ice-cream head & sprinkles, she with a strawberry ice-cream head decorated with marshmallows, who’ve been thrown together by a smiling Cupid sun. The god’s arrow has ruined the boy ice-cream’s leisurely parachute jump – but landed him PRECISELY to where the girl ice-cream is.

A random meeting, a glance, someone sits opposite you – always, you’ll find Cupid’s optimistic arrow somewhere near-by.
I’m not talking about liaisons, titillations that scratch an itch,

No, I’m talking about those few people, for most of us, we’re able to count them on one hand,
those who made a difference

Who you would ache to share trivialities with at the end of the day

Little nothings that seemed to add up to everything.

Oh, who you could have a whole conversation with in just one synchronized glance.

Whose body you would melt into, at night as Nature dared you to replicate.

Them.

Those ones.

You remember them, forever.

Their smile.

Their precious smile.

Their very special, sunshine smile.

Ah, if only I were king, the world would be made for smitten ice cream cones, I would decree that each receive whatever extras they desired, to glimmer and gleam under the holiday sun, laughingly melting into a gaudy, sickly-sweet sludge

Yes, I would want EVERYONE to know, to live, to love, at least once
