1  Introduction

If you’ve watched our music video, The Return Of Suburban Geek, you might recall the Road movie script that I’d been working on, in which Earth has been invaded by wisecracking aliens. Well, one of the songs from that soundtrack was called Teenage Armageddon and even when I dropped the Road movie idea, that title stayed with me – I was and still am convinced it’s a winner. Anyway, when I realized that the last fun, stage musical that speak for young people were Hair (1967) & Rocky Horror (1973), Teenage Armageddon found a reason to exist. Why not write a musical, specifically aimed at young people? In this era, it would probably be apolitical, a romance filled with vampires, monsters, zombies and Social Media!

Hmmm – well that was the initial idea but over the years, Teenage Armageddon developed along a different path (see: Section 6: Teenage Armageddon) but the zombies and the Social Media are still there.

However, I was stuck! I’d earmarked one of the songs, Zombie Baby, as the means to attract some finance to the project but I couldn’t find anyone to sing it! the musical. So, after several years, I bit the bullet and settled on my as-exciting-as-soggy-cornflakes voice. The aim is still the same – raise some cash and record more songs, perhaps, even the entire soundtrack!

6  An Introduction To The Teenage Armageddon Musical

Between you and me, Teenage Armageddon hasn’t exactly been a priority over the years and I only seem to only develop every once in a while, when something new pops into my head. Years after starting, both the plot & the soundtrack are only about 2/3 completed. It’s all a question of time & money, blah, blah, blah – completing the script would probably take me 3 months and then there’d be another 3 months of re-writes. Tat’s a lot of time with no cash coming in. Then I had a brainwave – why not attempt to raise some cash to write the script through crowdfunding?

I figured that if folks liked my demo for Zombie Baby, I might be able to attract some finance to record another couple of songs – in particular, [Secret Title] a Blues Brothers-like stomp, that calls out to the world that the time is ripe for a G-rated Revolution! It’s a song that virtually demands audience participation – to sing along to it, to tap along to it, possibly even to dance to and I genuinely think that it’s a winner. Together, Zombie Baby + [Secret Title] might be enough to get the full soundtrack recorded!

I figured that if I could raise $25,000, I could record [Secret Title] + another, with PRO musicians & singers + create/direct a snazzy animation video for it – way higher quality than my simple efforts – and still have enough left over to finance 3 months of script. Unfortunately, I tried and I tried but that kinda budget just didn’t feel right for crowdfunding – heck, crowdfunding artists often launch their campaigns to record an entire album for half that price. Though I had good intentions, I felt dirty, like I didn’t belong in a community with such earnest, dedicated LIVE musicians. So, I never ended up initiating a campaign and all I had to show for it was the video, below. Let me be clear, there is NO crowdfunding campaign but if tips reached $25,000 – I’d definitely record the new songs and finish the script, at least!

The good thing about this odd little video is that it also helps to explain how the Zombie Baby song actually fits into the musical:

The boy who faints is Benny, the President’s son from his first marriage, not the son of his present wife. The blue-haired girl is Jools, his girlfriend. When Benny attempts to make out with Chamelia, the new blonde bombshell, White House intern, Jools finds them more-than-flirting and runs away. Unfortunately, she gets caught up in the middle of the Zombie attack and when Benny recognizes the new Zombie-Jools, LIVE-streamed via Social Media – he runs to find her – as Zombie Baby, describes.

SPOILER ALERT: The musical does have a happy ending!

The script is lots of fun and the songs are pretty good – I think that with the right producer and decent singers, instead of me, there are 4 potential Top 20 singles. I’m a big fan of Rodgers & Hammerstein and their best work usually contained that many “hits”, so, that’s what I aim for – anything less is *snooty look* “musical theater”. If there’s a good fairy out there, who likes Zombie Baby and wants to take a risk on me, let’s talk.
